The monastery was a sheepfold until the end of World War II. In 1947 the icon of Saint Nicolas was found in the sheepfold and it did not take long for the sheepfold to be turned into a chapel. The icon still dominates inside the monastery.
The famous church of Saint Nicolas is located on the hill of Monte Smith, close to the city center of Rhodes.
