History

Its old name is Aghios Stefanos Hill and here was the Upper Acropolis of ancient Rhodes. The hill took its name, as it is known today, from the English Admiral Sidney Smith (Royal Navy officer), who had set up his observatory here in 1802, to follow the movements of Napoleon Bonaparte's fleet at sea during the war with them Turks. The truth is that the English admiral had made a very successful strategic move, as the view from the top of the hill is breathtaking, both to the old and new city of Rhodes, and to the sea, nearby islands and coasts of Asia Minor.
